How To Rack Focus Using Your iPhone

When you rack focus with a camera, you are switching between two focus points. You’ve seen this done in most movies. A person is looking at another person far away. The camera focuses on the person that is farthest away and the person closer to the camera goes out of focus. Then the camera focuses back to the person closest to the camera and the person farthest from the camera is now out of focus.

Why would you want to do this? It’s a story telling technique that places focus on a particular person, object or place. You can use this technique to improve your personal videos you shoot with your smartphone to make them look more “Hollywood” like.

This technique is usually accomplished with a nice filmmaking camera, but today, with the advancement of technology, you can actually do it with the iPhone 6s. You just need to use a different camera app then the one that comes with the iPhone. A more professional camera app for the iPhone that I like to use is FILMiC Pro, which allows me to manually focus between two points. It events lets me program those points and then all I have to do is just press a button and it will rack focus for me automatically.

In this episode, I show you how to rack focus with the FILMiC Pro camera app and the iPhone 6s.
